How to Fix BootMGR is missing Xp/Windows 7/Vista

One of my friend asked me for help, he said in SMS:
I have a gateway NV79. I had a Hard Drive Failure, so I bought a new SATA hard drive. I ordered the recovery discs from gateway. Everything was going good, until my laptop lost charge. Now when it says Bootmgr missing, Press Alt-Ctrl-Delete to restart.

There are few ways that the "BOOTMGR is missing" error may show up on your computer, with the first error I have listed being the most common:
    * "BOOTMGR is missing  Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart"
    * "BOOTMGR is missing Press any key to restart"
    * "Couldn't find BOOTMGR"

The "BOOTMGR is missing" error displays shortly after the computer is turned on, immediately after the Power On Self Test (POST) is complete. Windows has only initially started to load when the BOOTMGR error message appears.

Reasons of BOOTMGR Is missing Errors
There are a number of possible causes for BOOTMGR errors, including the most common "BOOTMGR is missing" error message. The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drive sectors, an outdated BIOS, and damaged or loose hard drive interface cables.
Another reason you might see BOOTMGR errors is if your PC is trying to boot from a hard drive or flash drive that is not properly configured to be booted from. In other words, it's trying to boot from a non-bootable source. This also would apply to media on an optical drive or floppy drive that you're trying to boot from.

Fix BootMGR is missing Xp/Windows 7/Vista Errors

Attempt 1. Restart the PC. The BOOTMGR error could be a fluke.

Attempt 2. Check your optical drives, USB ports, and floppy drives for media. Often times, the "BOOTMGR is Missing" error will appear if your PC is trying to boot to a non-bootable disc, external drive, or floppy disk.Note: If you find that this is the cause of your issue and it's happening regularly, you might want to consider changing the boot order in BIOS so the hard drive is listed as the first boot device.

Attempt 3. Reseat all internal data and power cables. BOOTMGR error messages could be caused by unplugged, loose, or malfunctioning power or controller cables.Try replacing the PATA or SATA cable if you suspect it might be faulty.

Attempt 4. Perform a Startup Repair of Windows. This type of installation should replace any missing or corrupt files, including BOOTMGR.
Even though a Startup Repair is a common solution for BOOTMGR problems, don't worry if it doesn't fix your problem. Just continue troubleshooting - something will work.

Attempt 5.
Write a new partition boot sector to the Windows system partition to correct any possible corruption, configuration problem, or other damage. The partition boot sector is an important piece in the boot process so if there's any issue with it, you'll see problems like "BOOTMGR is Missing" errors.

If the above five kinds of methods can help you, or when you try the third method you have got crazy, so, re-install system is the fastest way to solve all the problem caused by software. However, someone said I will lose the important data if re-install system. Never mind, someone had  excogitated how to backup data when windows won't boot !

If you Windows won't start, you can try Windows Data Reocvery Win PE. It is a complete data recovery software tool that can recover lost, deleted or formatted files from hard drive and other removable media, such as external hard drive, USB drive, flash drive, floppy drive, memory card, CF card, etc. It not only supports data recovery for Windows file system (FAT12/16/32, NTFS), but also for Mac (HFS+, HFS)and Linux file system (EXT2, EXT3).You can downlad this software from

NTLDR is missing on start up-How to solve It?

I shut down the computer yesterday, today when I started it it will run till the windows boot screen, when the bar reaches the end the screen will stay black and nothings happens. I tried to boot in safe mode but after loading the drivers it just stays there as well and wont go on with the boot. I wanted to repair the system with the Windows XP CD-ROM but I'm not given the option to repair. After it starts all the devices needed, i'm presented with the partitions I have on my PC to choose in which to install windows, if I pick one I can format and install or just install. Is there a way to run a repair or a scandisk to try and solve the blue screen of death when start up problem ?

When come across blue screen of death on start up caused by such as BOOTMGR is missing on start up , the first thing we do is find a way to repair windows.
Your last resort is the Windows XP CD which has a very useful tool called Recovery Console.
First boot from the Windows XP CD by inserting it in the optical drive and rebooting the computer. You will see the standard Windows XP setup screen loading - proceed till you come to the Welcome to the Setup menu.
Hit R to start up the Recovery Console and press the corresponding number to select the operating system (usually 1 if you only have a single operating system) you wish to repair.
At this point you will be expected to enter the administrator password.
The partition boot sector and the master boot record are essential for Windows to boot. If they become damaged by virus or configuration changes, windows won't start up.
Fixing the partition boot sector is easy as the built-in fixboot utility will help you write a new partition boot sector and overwrite the existing one which should solve any damage to this part of the system.
Type "fixboot" and press Enter and wait for the process to complete before you restart the system.
If you suspect the master boot record is also damaged then you can also fix it through another command - Fixmbr.
If you have only one drive, type "Fixmbr\Device\HardDisk0" and this should do the trick.
The method above can help to fix some windows problem as or NTLDR is missing on start up .If you think the above method is very complex, I suggest you find a professional people to repair you windows. In fact, solve computer won't boot issue just an easy thing, if you take your heart to do
Besides, if you want to re-install windows directly, but want to know how to recover data , you can follow by the tutorial " how to recover files when windows won't start "
